SHELLS
The larger riffled guns had an internal twist like the muskets and
could deliver a lighter shell a great distance they were measured
in barrel width . Cannons were measured by the ball or shell
weight they could fire. Like wise the Mortars were rated by the
weight of the shell delivered.
This relic was dug near where
the Siege of Petersburg took
place in the city of Petersburg and
Richmond (20 miles away) that
lasted for 9 months. Union loss
was estimated at 4,000 and
Confederate at 5,000 (not
accounting for civilian loss)

DELIVERY
This artifact appears to be a Bormann-Fuzed
spherical cannon shot with insert shot,
friction primer, final fuze holder and
projectile fragments It was found near, where
the Battle of Antietam took place. This battle
was fought on September 17th,1862 in
Sharpsburg, MD. It was to be known as the
"Bloodiest Battle" in American History
costing a total on both sides of 23,000 men.
